With a decent chunk of time left in the weekend (I had thought wrapping up the crib would eat the whole weekend), I decided to try my hand at sharpening and making a new handle for the Disston rip saw I bought at a flea market.
Before the Woodworking in America conference, I really hadn't experienced what a sharp saw feels like. A quick stop at Mike Wenzloff's booth fixed that. Holy cow. That was eye-opening. The old handle wasn't terrible in terms of function, but had been broken/repaired with a few ugly wood screws that drove me crazy.
Here's the fruit of my labor. Its made of cherry with blonde shellac rubbed out with 0000 steel wool. I think it turned out nice. It was really nice to be able to make a sort-of free form object. Unlike the scads of rectangular parts of crib, I got to bust out the rasps and files for this guy. Good times.

That's a nice handle! It looks comfy. You are going to hate it when we come back to Cincinnati and I spend every day in your basement (shop) touching your wood... I mean tool... I mean tools... You know what I mean!
Good luck with the baby stuff, that crib turned out nicely! If Nini hasn't popped by the time we come up for the holidays we'll stick Charlie in there and test its endurance >:)
Also we have much baby stuff for you. Unfortunately plane tickets have sapped all of our shipping money. :( The good news is that it's only $15 to check an extra piece of luggage on the plane, so you'll get more stuff way cheaper! W00t!
Lovely! The saw handle is quite impressive. However, my heart leans more toward the baby crib. After all, it was lovingly constructed for my first granddaughter...some of the construction occurred in my living room, as I recall... Keep up the excellent work!

Truly an awesome handle.
Where did you buy it?
Just kidding...it'sawesome.
I actually erred and skipped a space in the above sentence, but I left it there 'cause I think I made a pun.

ps Another suggestion. You might want to make your photos clickable so that one can enlarge them (by clicking on them).
[like Ben's...sorry]
Sigh.
Yeah, I know. Click-to-enlarge pictures would be nice.
Unfortunately, the level of technical sophistication I'm working at is no where near Ben's. I'm hoping he might be willing to offer a 30 minute crash course in blog-stuff.
Improvements to follow!
Hehehe, if you think you can concentrate between two-hour feeding/sleeping baby cycles I'm more than happy to help out! :)
